A group of Scout enthusiasts met a few years ago to discuss the future of scouting in Holmes County. While scouts are strong in this area, the group of nature-minded citizens and former scout leaders wanted to promote scouting values beyond the local unit level.
We feel that outdoor education, citizenship and leadership values need to be taught to the local youth; and in doing so we could offer ourselves as a resource to the public. We believe today’s youth need to work with their hands, get dirty, learn outdoor skills and have unstructured exploring fun-time. We also know that these youth
will someday play a role in leading our county, state and nation. Well-rounded youth become well-grounded leaders.
We formed Scouters of Holmes County, Inc. in late 2018 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization to drive our mission: “Investing in Tomorrow’s Leader”.
A sampling of our efforts so far:
• Getting Scouts outdoors in the community is important to us. We’ve partnered with The HC Park District, HC Soil & Water and local farmers to plant trees and promote planting on Earth Day. We’ve successfully planted thousands of trees right here in Holmes County!
• Helped fund Eagle Scout projects in Holmes County. Highlights include a safety guardrail at the Millersburg Catholic Church, a walking bridge at Deer Run Park, and an amphitheater project underway at Deer Run Park.
• Sponsor a booth at the HC Fair and organize Sunday Fairground cleanup.
• We are the Chartered Organization for Venture Crew 38 & Troop 338, the all-girl Troop in Holmes County. o Through the venture crew we have been able to give more than 50 people the opportunity to experience a high adventure trip to the Summit, Philmont, Sea Base & Northern Tier.
• Local Unit assistance to offset annual Scout dues.
• Given more than $10,000 in scholarship to support camping and high adventure trips in the past year.
We need your help. Each member has invested their time and personal money to fund our organization. We need additional funds so we can continue our work. We’d like your organization to become part of our larger movement by donating funds to our cause.
We’ve added frequently asked questions to help you better understand us.
Are you affiliated with The Boys Scouts of America? No, we are an independent organization. We work with the BSA, but we are independent, and in no way are we legally associated with them.
Who benefits from your organization? We have events for youth ages 7-18 years of age in Holmes County and surrounding areas.
Is this just for boy scouts? No. All youth are encouraged to participate. We do have some events just for scouts, but most are open to any youth in the county.
What is your goal? Train young men and women to be skilled in the outdoors, productive citizens and future leaders. Ultimately our dream is to own some property where we could build an indoor/outdoor cabin of sorts to conduct leadership training—along with enough ground to camp.
Who is on your Board? There is a local Board of Directors that includes Brodie DeHass (President), Kevin Mullet (Vice President), Tricia Mullet (Treasurer), Ben Crabb, Jeff Miller, Jake Mullet, Edna Zimmerly, and Rebecca Schlabach (non-Board Secretary). The Board meets regularly and is open to the public.
How do I donate? We accept all types of donations, and can be sent to PO Box 394, Millersburg, OH 44654. A check written to Scouters of Holmes County. All funds are scrutinized by the bank and Board meeting reports.
Is my donation tax deductible? We are a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit so yes you can. However, we are not tax experts, so we suggest you check with your tax advisor.
I’m interested in learning more, and I’d like to talk to someone. Who can I contact?
